Packing lines and circles
I will describe some venerable old results concerning packing (and non-packing) of lines and circles. This beautiful theory lies at the intersection of analysis and combinatorics, and is currently undergoing a remarkable renaissance. I will focus on classical theorems of Nikodym and Marstrand, via Apollonius of Perga, but I will also hint at current research directions and applications to wave equations. A tale which promises to twist and turn and defy intuition!
